PERSONAL PROFILES:

Rector of the University of Łódź (President)

Professor Antoni Różalski was born on the 19 of October 1952 in Ziębice, Lower Silesia, Poland. Main research fields: microbiology, immunochemistry and bacterial immunology.

Having finished his secondary education in Pińczów, Świętokrzyskie, he began his studies at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Science, at the University of Łódź in 1971. He graduated in 1976 with Master’s Degree in Biology, specialization: microbiology.

In the same year, he started his work at the University of Łódź, in the Division of General Microbiology. He earned his Ph.D. in 1984, achieved habilitation in 1991, was awarded the Professor’s title in 1996 and became full Professor in 2002. Since 1997 he has been the chair of the Section of Immunobiology of Bacteria at the Institute for Microbiology, Biotechnology and Immunology at the University of Łódź.

He has been conducting both immunochemical and immunobiological research on bacterial lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin). He also deals with virulence factors of pathogenic bacteria of the genera Proteus and Providencia, and the role of these pathogens in urinary system infections.

He has been a project manager of three State Committee for Scientific Research grant projects, and a project team member of four SCSR grant projects. He has completed two long-term research placement periods in Forschungszentrum Borstel, Germany. For many years, he has cooperated with the Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Recently, he has started  cooperation with the School of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology of the Nankai University in Tianjin, China. He is an author, or co-author of over 100 original research works, 30 survey articles, over 100 press releases from Polish and international conferences, as well as an open textbook, and an English coursebook’s translation.

He conducts lectures on microbiology to students of Biology, Environmental Science and Biotechnology. He also gives monographic lectures on bacterial pathogenicity factors. He has been a faculty supervisor to 7 PhD and 50 Master’s degree holders. He was a reviewer for 30 doctorates, 3 habilitations and 3 awards of the highest academic title.

A reviewer for over 100 grant projects of the State Committee for Scientific Research and of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, twice appointed as an expert panel member. He has also reviewed over 50 publications in Polish and international magazines.

He held the position of Vice Dean between the years 1991 and 1993. From 1996 to 2002 he served as a Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Earth Science, and from 2002 as the Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Science.

Since 1997, he has been an UL representative in the Research Grants Commission of the President of Lodz.

He is a member of the Polish Society of Microbiologists, the Society for Clinical Microbiology, and the Lodz Scientific Society. From 2003 to 2008 he was the President of the Sciences Department of the Lodz Scientific Society.  He is now an officer of the LSS management board. Since 2004, he has been a member of the Scientific Council at the Medical Biology Centre of the Lodz branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 2007, he has been a member of the Committee on Microbiology at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 2000, he has been a member of the editorial council of the “Postępy Mikrobiologii” (Progress of Microbiology) magazine.

Vice-Rector for Scientific Research

Prof. dr hab. Elżbieta Żądzińska

Professor Elżbieta Żądzińska was born in 1967 in Sieradz (Łódź region). She studied at the University of Łódź and received her Master’s degree in biology from the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences in 1990.

In 1999, she earned a doctorate degree in biological sciences followed by a habilitation in the same field in 2005. In 2014, the President of Poland awarded her the title of Professor of Biological Sciences. During the 25 years of work at the University of Łódź, she has worked her way up through all the stages of scientific career: from technical staff member to Full Professor (1 March 2015). Between 2005 and 2008, Professor Żądzińska served as Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, and later became Dean of the Faculty (2008 – 2016). Her main research areas are: human biology of contemporary and historical populations, determinants of population stress (secondary sex ratio, fluctuating asymmetry, abnormal ratio of weight-growth) and odontology.

 

 

Vice-Rector for Domestic and International Co-operation

Dr hab. Paweł Starosta, Assoc. Prof.

Professor Paweł Starosta was born in 1951. A native resident of Łódź and a Ludwik Zamenhof Secondary School (XXXI LO) alumnus, Professor Starosta is a graduate of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Łódź. He received a Master’s degree in sociology in 1974, and in 1984 he earned a doctorate in humanities.

In 1996, he was conferred habilitation in humanities (sociology) at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Silesia in Katowice. Since 1973, he has worked at the University of Łódź. Associate Professor at the University of Łódź since 1997, he served as Vice-Dean for Science at the Faculty of Economics and Sociology, and then as Dean of the Faculty in 2001 – 2008 and 2012 – 2016. He is currently Head of the Department of Rural and Urban Sociology. His main areas of research and research interests include the sociology of territorial communities, social capital, the processes of globalization and social participation.

 

 

Vice-Rector for Education

Prof. dr hab. Sławomir Cieślak

Professor Slawomir Cieślak was born in 1971 in Przedbórz (Łódź region). He studied at the University of Łódź, where he began his academic career after graduating from the Faculty of Law and Administration in 1994.

He went on to receive a doctorate degree at the same faculty in 1999 and was conferred habilitation in the Science of Law in 2008. Since then he has worked as Associate Professor at the University of Łódź, and has also been active in the same position at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow since 2012. Prof. Cieślak was Vice-Dean at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Łódź during two terms: 2008 – 2012 and 2012 – 2016. He currently is Professor at the Department of Civil Procedure I at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Łódź. He also serves as Head of the Division of Civil Procedure at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University. In September 2016, the President of Poland awarded him the title of Professor of Law. Professor Sławomir Cieślak specializes in civil procedure law. He has been editor-in-chief of “Enforcement Law Review” since 2012.

Dr hab. Tomasz Cieślak, Assoc. Prof.

Professor Tomasz Cieślak was born in 1966 in Łódź. He studied Polish language and literature at the University of Łódź between 1985 – 1990. During his studies, he joined the student underground movement – he took part in the reactivation of the Student Government, worked in the Civitas Academica organization, and collaborated with the Independent Association of Students (NZS).

In 1997, he received the doctorate degree in humanities. In 2012, he was issued habilitation in the same field. He has been employed as Associate Professor at the Department of Literature and the Tradition of Romanticism since 2013. His main academic area is twentieth-century and contemporary Polish poetry.

 

 

Vice-Rector for Finance

Dr hab. Grzegorz Urbanek, Assoc. Prof.

Professor Grzegorz Urbanek was born in 1964 in Łódź. He graduated in Economic Cybernetics and Informatics from the University of Łódź in 1988. He earned a doctorate degree in Managerial Economics in 1999 and was issued habilitation in 2008.

Since then, he has been employed as Associate Professor at the Department of Finance and Strategic Management of the University of Łódź. He currently serves as Head of the Division of Company Valuation and Value-Based Management. From 2012 to 2016, he was Vice-Dean for Finance and Development at the Faculty of Management. His main research interest is company valuation and value-based management, valuation of intangible assets and intellectual property.
